Some Modern Ayurveda Readings

The following list is part of a selection kindly made available to us by Dr Dominik Wujastyk of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL, with some additions.

Taylor (1998), Leslie (1998b), Leslie (1992), Leslie (1975), Meulenbeld (1995), Zimmermann (1992) deal with different aspects of the modernization of Ayurveda. Issues of western hegemony relating to traditional epistemologies are raised by Shankar (1995) and Shankar and Manohar (1995). Shankar (1992) places traditional medicine in the context of contemporary healthcare. Zysk (2001) examines the redefinition of ayurveda as a New Age therapy. Nichter (1981) is an anthropologist's look at the issues raised in ayurvedic clinical encounters. Phillips (1990) examines the role of traditional systems of medicine as part of a whole health package for third-world countries. Stepan (1983) discusses the post-independence government advisory committees on ayurveda, and the legislation for ayurveda. Brass (1972) and Leslie (1983) cover some similar ground. Kaiser (1992) is a summary of the professionalization processes from 19th century to the present. Majumdar (1998: 280-308) gives useful lists of undergraduate ayurvedic colleges, Indian government regulations and exam syllabuses and qualification requirements. Rao (1994) is a collection of surreal government college examination papers on ayurveda. Ramsey (1999: 286-291) gives a valuable discussion of terminology, and introduces the term "counterhegemonic medicine".
