About Graham Stanton

Graham Stanton is a New Testament scholar with special interests in the Gospels, Paul's letters, and second century Christian writings.

He held the Chair of New Testament Studies at King's College in the University of London from 1977 to 1998. Since then he has held the Lady Margaret's Professorship of Divinity, this University's oldest Chair (1502).

In 1996-7 he served as the President of the international learned society of New Testament scholars. For nine years he was Editor of the journal New Testament Studies and of the associated monograph series, both published by Cambridge University Press and considered to be the leaders in the field. He is a General Editor of the International Critical Commentaries, for over 100 years the leading set of commentaries in English on the Bible. He has lectured widely in the English-speaking world, and also in Europe.

His most recent book, Jesus and Gospel (CUP, 2004) includes extended discussions of early Christian use of the term "Gospel", and early Christian addiction to the codex / book format over against the ubiquitous roll.

In 2005 he has presented with a Festschrift to mark his 65th birthday: The Written Gospel, eds. M. Bockmuehl and D. Hagner, CUP. This book includes a full list of Graham Stanton's publications on pp.296-300.

In 2006 he was awarded the British Academy's Burkitt Medal for his contribution to Biblical Studies.
