Language tuition

The Faculty offers various languages which can be taken at the MPhil level, including the following (subject to available teaching in the relevant year):

  • Latin (elementary and advanced);
  • German (elementary), Hebrew (elementary);
  • Greek (elementary and intermediate);
  • Aramaic;
  • Syriac;
  • Sanskrit;
  • and Qur'anic Arabic.

Some lectures are available in other stages of these languages, which students may attend but not take for examination at the MPhil. Other languages are provided in various seminars in Divinity, such as Coptic and Classical Ethiopic (Ge'ez), and in reading groups, including advanced Greek. Additional languages may also be available through the Faculties of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Classics, and Archaeology and Anthropology.

The University's Language Centre also provides courses which are available to students. The Centre has a large number of resources, including electronic learning aids and recordings to assist in learning a language.
