Points Based Immigration (PBI) System

The UK operates a points-based immigration system; Tier 4 is for students. It is your responsibility to make sure you identify whether you require a visa, and then to understand, meet, and comply with these immigration requirements. If you require a visa, the University must sponsor you; you cannot use an existing Tier 4 visa issued for another institution.

If you are a current student requiring more time to remain in the UK, you will need to make a new visa application before your current visa expires, and the University must sponsor you. Please see the PBI Office website for further information.

If you need to apply for a new student visa, or extend your current student visa, you must make your application under the UK Border Agency's Points Based Immigration System Tier 4 Student (General) legislation. Please see the PBI Office website for information.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

All non-European Economic Area (EEA, comprising European Union plus Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein) candidates for PhD-level research degrees or Masters courses in certain science and technology subjects will be required to obtain an ATAS clearance certificate before obtaining a visa. For more information on ATAS, including details on which courses are covered by the scheme, please see the ATAS webpage.
