Professor Nathan MacDonald has just published an article (https://doi.org/10.1093/jts/flaf090) on maps of Palestine and their representation of the twelve tribes of Israel. He argues that these maps, including the first map in the Bible, which appeared 500 years ago, have influenced the modern idea of political borders.
