Kant Seminar | Michaelmas Term 

Opus Postumum


We start a new seminar on the last magnum opus of Immanuel Kant, the unfinished Opus Postumum, a work Kant himself described as his masterpiece and as the keystone of his entire philosophical system. The first edition of the Opus postumum (Kant's title would have been Transition [Übergang] from the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science to Physics), consisting of unpublished notes and fragments written between 1798 and 1803, was published for the first time in 1882/4 by Rudolf Reicke (The complete ms. was published only in 1936/8 by G. Lehmann).

We will be using the edition of Eckart Förster, and the English translation of Eckart Förster and Michael Rosen (note: you have Online access to the book through the University Library).

The first half of the gathering will be spent in reading the text; the second half, in discussion.
