Library catalogue and locating books

The Library catalogue is part of the University's online catalogue, Newton. Choose the Departments and Faculties A-E database or the LibrarySearch (to search all libraries across the University). The computers in the Library can be used to search the catalogue. Instructions are available or you may ask a member of staff for help.

Books are arranged in the following sections:

  • 1: Reference: dictionaries, encyclopaedias, grammars, atlases, concordances.
  • 2: Bible as a whole, plus Bibles and commentaries.
  • 3: Old Testament
  • 4: Judaism
  • 5: New Testament
  • 6: History to 1600
  • 7: Patristics and classical texts
  • 8: History since 1600
  • 9: Christian doctrine, ethics and theology
  • 10: Philosophy of religion, social science, science and religion, ethics, literature
  • 11: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, other non-Judaeo-Christian religions
  • 12: Liturgy and worship, homiletics, ecclesiology
  • 13: Periodicals
  • 14: Bibliographies, librarianship

The classmark consists of the section number followed by the first few letters of the author's name, except in Section 1 where the first three letters of the title are used. The exceptions are: biographies (filed under the name of the subject rather than the author); Festschriften (filed under the name of the person honoured); books with no author (filed under title). Reference works are divided into sections: atlases, concordances, dictionaries, encyclopaedias. Commentaries in Section 2 are arranged by series.

Periodicals and other materials

  • Online resources: The computers in the Library can be used to access online resources such as the ATLA Religion Database, online journals, electronic books and databases. More information about online resources is available.
  • Periodicals: You can search for titles on the Newton catalogue using a journal title search, and a list of titles is available. Bound volumes are kept in Section 13. Recent issues are displayed on a rack opposite the Issue Desk. Many titles are also available online.
  • Reading lists & course materials: Reading lists and some set texts are available on the Faculty's CamTools site. You will need your Raven password to access CamTools - please speak to a member of Library staff if you would like any help.
  • Exam papers: Past exam papers are available on the Faculty's CamTools site. Printed copies are kept in the photocopier room.
  • Pamphlets: These are filed alphabetically by title at the end of Section 14 (reference only).
  • Dissertations: A small reference collection is kept in the Senior Library Assistant's office. A list of titles is available.

Borrowing and renewing books

All books to be borrowed or returned must be given to a member of staff at the Issue Desk. Readers need to have their University/UL cards with them to borrow books.

Most books are Long loan- up to eight may be borrowed for a week at a time during Full Term. Short Loan books may be borrowed for two days. These are mainly bound periodicals and are marked with an 'S' in the inside front cover or a yellow spine label. Reference books may not be borrowed. These are mainly in Section 1 and are marked with a red spine label and an 'R' in the inside front cover.

  • Renewals: Readers receive an email notice the day before books are due for return. Books can be renewed online (log in to Your Account on Newton using your barcode), or in person at the issue desk. Instructions for renewing online are available.
  • Vacations: During the Vacation up to eight books may be borrowed until the beginning of the next term.
  • Fines: These are levied for all readers at 20p per late book per working day.
  • Reservations: All material that is on loan can be reserved via the Newton catalogue (find the book you want to reserve and then select ‘RequestsÂ’) or at the Issue Desk. Once the book is returned to the Library you will be notified via email and the book will be held for you for three days. Books that have been reserved may not be renewed and must be returned by the original due date.

Internet Access

The computers in the Library can be used to search the catalogue, access the internet and check email.

The University's Lapwing wireless service is available in the Faculty of Divinity Library. Lapwing is available to current staff and students of the University of Cambridge and accredited academic visitors to the Faculty of Divinity. You must have a Raven account to access Lapwing.

The Computing Service publishes a useful introduction to Lapwing if you're unfamiliar with it.

Email

Readers are notified by email about the following: books due for return, overdue books, reservations and other Library business. Email is the preferred method for contacting the Library.

Photocopying and printing

There is a photocopier/printer in the Library. A4 copies are 10p per page and A3 copies are 20p per page.

You will need to purchase a card from the Issue Desk. Two values of card are available: 20 copies for £2.00 and 50 copies for £5.00. The cards are rechargeable. When you have run out of credit you can pay for more at the Issue Desk. Please note that copyright laws apply at all times. These are displayed in the photocopier room.

There is a slot on the right-hand side of the photocopier to allow printing via a memory stick.

Book recommendations

Suggestions can be given to the Librarian, via email or on the Book Recommendation slips.

Enquiries

Please speak to any member of Library staff if you have an enquiry or would like help using the catalogue or online resources. Alternatively you can email the Library.

Bags

Bags larger than a small handbag are not allowed in the Library. Lockers are available on the first floor. Keys must be signed for at the Issue Desk and returned at the end of your visit. Alternatively bags may be left opposite the Issue Desk.

Care of books

Whilst books are on loan they are the responsibility of the reader. They must not be written in or have text underlined, or be defaced or damaged in any way. The reader will be liable for the full cost of a replacement copy.
