Death of Dr Javier Garcia

The Faculty is saddened to hear news of the death of Dr Javier Garcia in a surfing accident off the Oregon coast. Dr Garcia completed the Diploma, MPhil and PhD in the Faculty (2016, under the supervision of Stephen Plant), and he won a Faculty prize for his MPhil in 2011, the MPhil thesis being published later as a journal article. His research focused on the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, ecumenism, and the place of the church in a secular age. His first book, Recovering the Ecumenical Bonhoeffer: Thinking after the Tradition, appeared with Fortress Academic in 2019. As assistant professor of religious studies and director of the honors program at George Fox University in Oregon, he cared for his students and was much loved by his colleagues and friends.
