Faculty of Divinity

11th July, 2020 sad news that Professor Nicholas Lash, the Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity from 1978-1999, died in the early morning.

Professor Nicholas Lash, the Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity from 1978-1999.

He was a lively intellectual presence in the Faculty, author of many books, and a prominent theological influence in the Roman Catholic Church. He was awarded a Papal Knighthood in 2017.

My own memories of him include his regular attendance at the New Testament seminar, providing a rare interdisciplinary engagement in the Faculty. Always sitting just to the right of Professor Hooker, he would be ready to highlight the logical incoherence or theological improbability of many a New Testament scholar’s arguments.

May he rest in peace.
