The Faculty welcomes Professor George van Kooten as the Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity

Professor George van Kooten has been elected the new Lady Margaret’s Professor of Divinity, with effect from October 2018

Professor van Kooten studied in Leiden, Durham and Oxford, and is currently Professor of New Testament & Early Christianity at the University of Groningen.

His research interest is the embedding of the New Testament in the Graeco-Roman world, and in particular in the history of the Roman empire, and in Graeco-Roman philosophical thought. He published monographs on Paul’s cosmology and anthropology in their Graeco-Roman context, and undertook research on the background of Matthew’s Magi in Roman-Parthian relations, and the interpretation of Paul in modern philosophy.

His current monograph projects are on Paul’s political philosophy and on John’s Gospel between Greek philosophy and mythology. He is co-founder and editor of the new Brill series “Ancient Philosophy & Religion” that seeks to explore the relation between religion and philosophy in Antiquity.
