The Christian God

Masaccio (1401–1428), The Holy TrinityChristian theology is grounded in its understanding of the nature of God. This module looks at that doctrine of God through the works of four leading theologians: Athanasius of Alexandria, John of Damascus, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Karl Barth.

The doctrine of God is foundational to Christian Theology. In their written work, students can therefore take engagement with these writers and their texts in many different directions. Popular avenues for exploration include the relation to some other area in Christian theology, such as Christology, or creation, or exploration in dialogue with themes concerning literature, politics, or liturgical practice.
