Biography:

Mark Smith's research focuses on the history and theology of the early church. His recent monograph, The Idea of Nicaea in the Early Church Councils, was published by Oxford University Press in December 2018. Dr Smith lectures in patristics, and is also Dean of Clare College, and Director of Studies in Theology at Clare and Christ's. 

Research Interests

  • The conciliar life of the early church
  • The construal of Christian orthodoxy
  • The concept of the development of doctrine

Teaching

Dr Smith lectures and supervises in: 

  • B6: Christianity in Late Antiquity
  • D2a: Councils in Context

He is also Paper Coordinator for D2a.
